The first international conference was held in Doha, Qatar in November of 2013, over 500 attendees from nearly 50 nations gathered to improve the condition for Deaf Muslims throughout the world.
The forum was sponsored and hosted by the Highly Esteemed Minister of Culture, Arts, and Heritage, Dr. Hamad Bin Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari of Qatar. Dignitaries from the Qatari ministry, the U.S. Department of State, and the World Federation of the Deaf were in attendance.
During the forum, leaders within the Deaf community and their supporters shared their experiences, successes, and hardships. Issues such as Deaf rights, accessibility to Islam, and the Deaf Muslim experiences in several nations were shared. Some presentations even highlighted new technology being used to help Deaf Muslims have greater access to Islamic information in their own sign languages. A professionally developed dictionary of Islamic terms in Arabic Sign Language were distributed for free to attendees.
Additionally, the forum provided an invaluable networking opportunity for Deaf Muslim organizers and community members. All in all, the forum left attendees with a high-level of inspiration and innovative ideas that they were able to take back with them to their home nations.
The second international conference is expected to occur in 2015 with the location to be determined. If you would like to submit a presentation proposal and/or send a representative from your organization to the 2015 conference, please send an e-mail to contact @ globaldeafmuslim.org.
